The European Commission is investing €46 million from the Digital Europe Programme to pilot and enhance the European Digital Identity (EUDI) wallet. This wallet aims to revolutionise how citizens and businesses can digitally identify themselves when accessing public and private services throughout Europe, using their smartphones securely and conveniently.

The investment supports 4 pan-European pilot projects that will develop and test the EUDI wallet for various everyday use-cases, covering both national and cross-border interactions. The goal is to prepare for the entry into force of the European Digital Identity Regulation, and each EU citizen will be provided with access to the EUDI wallet on a mobile device to ensure a secure and user-friendly eID by 2030. The pilot projects involve over 250 organisations from multiple Member States and will run for at least 2 years, representing a combined investment of over €90 million. The projects will work closely with the European Commission and contribute to the ongoing development of technical specifications for the EUDI wallet.
